Text references on the Queen Anne Revival, for example, omit this phrase in any associated illustrations despite the inclusion of several examples.While there is a rather thin but adequately illustrated glossary of house types, this omits Books of this kind tend to fall into two groups: the meticulous, often scholarly works by authors such as Brunskill, Lloyd or Clifton-Taylor explaining regional distinctiveness; or illustrated compendia (often referred to as source books) devoted to a particular period (Edwardian House Style, for example) or geographical area. London in Detail (1980), with 2,000 black and white photos, conveys the eclecticism of building details particularly but dispenses with any analysis. The author must have started out with the best of intentions and this is a nice book to thumb through once. But it is doubtful if it will help ‘readers identify styles quickly and easily through just a few characteristics’ and it is unlikely to inform would-be restorers or encourage engagement in conservation among those who presumably represent the principal target readership. It might have been better either with fewer illustrations but more analysis, or considerably more illustrations. John Prizeman’s Your House: the outside view (1975) conveyed considerably more information in a smaller format, a similar number of pages and just two-thirds of the illustrations, and remains a model for this kind of publication. Bob Kindred MBE This is a curious book, quite attractive to look at but without an obvious purpose. While it makes passing initial references to regional distinctiveness and geological diversity, these are not developed. The author briefly describes and then illustrates, with 600 colour examples, a range of generally polite architectural detailing (rather than vernacular building traditions).The book does not deal with interiors and Britain does not include Ireland. Organisation is firstly by type (roofs, gables, windows, doors etc) and then by materials (brick, terracotta, iron, etc). A brief introduction to each section highlights changes in fashion and technology but fails to explain the underlying architectural principles behind the features incorporated, or the practical advantages or disadvantages of any of the examples chosen. features or building terms.
