Monks came here from Beaulieu, the present home of Lord Montagu in the south of the New Forest. ·The monks moved in in 1239. In 1251 Henry III declared himself patron of the Abbey so work is thought to have begun in the 1240's. The Ab~~y became a house for Sir William Pauletat the Reformation, but is now an unoccupied Scheduled Ancient Monument _in the care of the HBMC.
