The IHBC Gus Astley Student Award is another area that has grown with Devon’s responsibilities. The many students who have entered the award know of and have responded to her informed guidance and encouragement. This covers everything from the technicalities of the evolving digital submission process, and the now substantial guidance on the process, to the encouragement for nervous speakers often giving their first public talk at the IHBC’s fringe of the annual school, and of course helping us source relevant speakers in their own right. Developing our NewsBlogs and email alerts was a process much helped by Devon’s innate understanding of how to communicate effectively in the modern world. The first conversation I had outlining the idea of the NewsBlog and associated alerts was to Devon in Edinburgh from a mobile phone in Charing Cross. I only needed to outline the idea and Devon was able to pick up on the principle, and help move forward discussions with our IT team, all with the most cursory of outlines. Polyglot, SPAB member and events organiser, Devon has also revealed her substantial commitment to the IHBC by leaving at a time when the impact of her departure is about as minimal as it could be. She is phasing her departure so that she will be able to maintain her role in the current annual school, maintaining her role as a volunteer in our Facebook and Twitter operations, and helping with the transition by making herself available to advise on procedures during this time of change. Interestingly, the title of this article also applies to Devon’s immediate successor, Joanna Theobald, who is part of the consultancy team that provides our web services. Together with her partner IHBC member Peter Badcock, Joanna has, with Devon, helped develop our NewsBlog. Joanna and Peter are planning now on the move from their home in the south west of England, in Devon. So, presuming that they will return there at least occasionally, they too will be saying ‘au revoir, Devon’. But it would be tasteless to make anything of that coincidence.
