Site Visits to The Merchant City, Kelvingrove and Castlemilk Stables

Afternoon tours:

Site visits for Saturday 20th November
Visits will commence from outside Glasgow City Chambers, George Square, 2pm.

The Merchant City walking tour and The Briggait site visit
The Merchant City area in Glasgow has undergone a dramatic transformation in the past two decades.  Previously redundant historic buildings now house theaters and galleries, interspersed with shops, cafes, boutique hotels and restaurants.  This walking tour, focusing on how the regeneration was funded and project managed, will be lead by Liz Davidson from the Merchant City Townscape Heritage Initiative.  The tour will culminate in a visit to The Briggait, the city’s old fishmarket, which has recently been transformed into a vibrant new home for over 80 visual artists and cultural organisations.

Castlemilk Stables
Castlemilk Stables is an historic B-listed stables block, originally designed in 1790.  The prize-winning regeneration project to bring the stables back to life was completed in 2007.  Anne McChlery, Director of Glasgow Building Preservation Trust who project-managed the restoration, will lead a tour of the site and discuss the dramatic transformation of this formally derelict building, and the impact it has had on the local community.

Coach transport will be provided to and from the venue.

Kelvingrove Museum
Category A-listed Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum reopened in 2006 after a £27.9million, three year restoration, with a mixture of private, public and third sector funding. This site visit to the museum will include an introduction and tour focused on the refurbishment, lead by an expert from the project team.

As well as being a prime example of a multi-agency funded heritage project, Kelvingrove is Scotland's most visited tourist attraction.

Coach transport will be provided to and from the venue in the west end of the city.
