The session will feature an actual 'problem' building which requiresa funded solution to bringit back to life. The Old Courthouse in Campbeltown is probablythe oldest surviving building in the town, dating from the early 18th century and with significant 19th century alterations. The Courthouse, built on an intriguingcourtyard plan, has been put to a variety of uses in the past - possibly starting life as a mercantile family's residence, then converted in the 1850's to a public hall. Later it was used as the Sheriff Court and Police Office, and more recently as the NAAFI in World War II and latterly as the Civic Defence Hall and rehearsal space for the town pipe band.

The structure is significantly 'at risk' and poses many intriguing funding challenges which the workshops will aim to solve. What should the new end-use be? What opportunities are therefor partnership working in the context of local regeneration schemes and the aspirations of local community groups? What barriers need to be overcome to deliver a successful outcome - resolving ownership and access questions, tackling serious economic challenges such as low property prices, an aging population, structural unemployment and reconciling the many planning and conservation issues facing the project.

Facilitators, highly experienced in delivering this type of project, will lead each of the three workshops.

Details of the scenario will be issued in advance of the Conference. This will provide all delegates with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the background to the Old Courthouse and to allow time for some creative thinking around potential solutions for the project.
